What to do before we get there

Three things that limit the damage in the time between your call and our van pulling up.

Shut off the water Find the main valve, usually near the meter or where the supply enters the basement, and turn it clockwise until it stops. If the leak is at one fixture, the small valve under it may be enough.
If you smell gas, get out first Leave the building before you do anything else, and call from outside. Do not touch light switches, plugs or anything that could spark on the way out.
